Coaches:

Coaches in our program are volunteers and do not receive any compensation for their services. Coaches may

or may not be parents of a player on a team. If you are interested in helping out the WYB Travel Basketball

program in any capacity, please contact Bruce Gerber for more details. We are always looking for good

coaches and willing volunteers for our program.

League:

3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade WYB Travel Basketball teams are planning on participating in the Central Ohio

Boys Basketball Association (COBBA) basketball league. For more information on COBBA, visit

www.centralohiobasketball.com.

Fees:

Fees per player will be approximately $350 and can be paid in 3 installments. The fee includes gym rental for

games and practice, a uniform, two licensed referees per game, the COBBA league fee, team equipment, and

team/player liability insurance. Fees depend upon how many players are on each team.

Practices:

Depending on gym availability, each team will have two practices during the week sometime between 5:00 and

9:00 pm. Practices will begin in late October and conclude in the middle of February. Additional practices can

be scheduled at the discretion of the coach.

Games:

Each team will play in the COBBA preview just prior to Thanksgiving, approximately 9 home games, 9 away

games, and a COBBA league tournament in the middle of February. Most games will be played on Saturday

and Sunday, but there could be occasional weeknight games. League games will be held from late November

to early February with a two week break during the Christmas holiday. Most away games will be within a 30

minute drive. More away games can be scheduled at the discretion of the coach.

Tournaments:

Each team will participate in the season ending COBBA tournament, which is covered by the player fees.

Teams may participate in more tournaments at the discretion of the coach, but the players on the team would

be responsible for any additional fees. Coaches will get the approval of the parents before committing to

additional tournaments.

Playing Time:

The philosophy on playing time at the Travel Basketball level is that it will not be even for a player for each

game. Coaches will be expected to play each player at least a quarter of every game, with some players

receiving more playing time in one game and less playing time in another game. Every attempt will be made to

provide playing time of 50% over the season for the league games. It is important that all players receive an

appropriate amount of playing time to ensure their development as a basketball player.

Expectations:

We encourage young athletes to participate in all sports in which they desire. However, the expectation is that

a WYB Travel Basketball player will make basketball their top athletic priority during the basketball season and

make every effort to attend all practices and games.

Selection Process:

The players will be evaluated by members of WYB, potential coaches of respective teams, and coaches of the

varsity programs at Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne High Schools. Players will be evaluated

on their individual fundamental dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defensive skills. Players will also

be evaluated in how they fit into a team concept. The evaluators will meet and form teams based on all

evaluation criteria available. The number of teams in each grade will depend on how many travel caliber

teams can be formed, but our desire is to have 2 or 3 teams in each grade consisting of 8 to 10 players per

team.

Notification Process:

Players who are chosen for the team will receive an e-mail message or phone call as soon as possible after

tryouts have been completed. The player will have 48 hours to accept the roster invitation. If the player does

not accept the offer, it will be rescinded and the roster spot will be offered to another player. All players who

are not chosen for a travel team will receive an e-mail message or phone call referring them to other

basketball opportunities in the community.

Goals:

The WYB Travel Basketball program will provide a positive experience for every player while building selfesteem

and confidence. Players will be encouraged to be good teammates, show sportsmanship, and work

hard at all times. Fundamental skill development will be emphasized, especially in the practice setting. While

players will be exposed to a more competitive level of basketball, we are not a win at all costs program. Our

goal is to spark an interest in basketball for each player so much so that they will want to work on their

fundamental skills in the off-season, and continue their playing careers into middle school and high school.

Contact Info:

Please contact WYB Basketball Director, Bruce Gerber, if you have any questions about the Travel Basketball

program. E-Mail: brucegerber@yahoo.com. Phone: 614-554-5124.

Welcome to WES Wellness!

Welcome back!  My name is Mr. Troast and I am the new Wellness teacher at Worthington Estates.  I am very excited to be here and to have your child in Wellness class.  My goal as your child’s wellness teacher is to help each student understand the importance of wellness and being active.  I desire for each student to find a physical activity that he or she enjoys which will enable them to become active and healthy members of society.  In order for you and your child to understand the expectations of wellness class I ask that you please read over the following guidelines and information with your child.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me via phone (450-4600) or e-mail (BTroast@worthington.k12.oh.us).

Background Information
I am originally from Midland Park, New Jersey and recently moved to Columbus in August of 2009 to be with my wife of now three years.  I graduated from Calvin College in 2007 with a degree in Recreation – Youth Leadership with a minor Physical Education.  Since moving here, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a physical education teacher.  I graduated from The Ohio State University in December of 2012 with a second degree in Physical Education.  I am in my fourth year of coaching the varsity boys’ soccer team at Tree of Life Christian School.

Classroom Rules/Expectations – THE GOLDEN SNEAKER

  •  Each time your child attends Wellness, his or her class will have the opportunity to earn 5 points.  Those points will be based on how the class demonstrated the 7 Habits during that class period.
  • At the end of each month the class with the most number of points from each grade will be awarded the “Golden Sneaker” trophy to be displayed in their classroom for the month
  • The class in each grade that wins the most “Golden Sneaker Awards” will receive a reward day at the end of the school year
  •  SHOES:  Sneakers (tennis shoes) must be worn during Wellness class.  If the correct shoes are not worn, your child will not be allowed to participate.  This rule is in place for the safety of your child as well as all the other students in the class.  Correct footwear will also allow for your child to be more successful in the activities.  In order for a class to receive all 5 of their daily points towards the “Golden Sneaker Award” they must all have the correct shoes.

Participation
Class participation is mandatory unless your child has an injury and a doctor’s note.  I will require a doctor’s note clearing your child in order to readmit them into class.

  • If your child has an illness/injury preventing them from participating please send a note explaining the problem
  • If your child has any kind of illness that will impact them in wellness that I should be aware of please contact me by phone or e-mail

Physical Education State Standards and Assessment

  • Physical education assessments in the state of Ohio began as a requirement during the 2012 – 2013 school year
  • All students in the 2nd and 5th grades will be assessed each year based on the national Physical Education standards
  • These scores are reported to the state of Ohio and overall results are shown on the district report card
  • If you want more information on these assessments please feel free to contact me

Grades
Grades for all Related Arts classes are given at the end of the 1st semester and at the end of the year.  Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns.

Wellness Challenge
I will be implementing a Wellness Challenge program this school year beginning in September.  Each week your child will have a physical activity challenge to complete outside of school.  If they complete 3 of the 4 challenges each month, they will be entered into a raffle for a prize.  Prizes include vouchers to Magic Mountain, Sports Ohio, The Chiller, Skate Zone and MUCH MORE!  My goal for the Wellness Challenge is to encourage physical activity outside of school in order to promote an active lifestyle outside of my Wellness class.  Parent signatures are required in order for your child to participate in the Wellness Challenge.  An example of the Wellness Challenge calendar and Wellness log is attached.

I am looking forward to a fun and exciting school year with you and your child!  Thank you for your support and again, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Mr. Troast
